Our second interview in our Golden Pin Design Award (GPDA) series is with Lei Hou Keong (or Bob Lei), Director of Todot Design in Macau and recipient of the GPDA 2015 Design Mark (Visual Communications) award. Here we speak to Bob about recent projects, how he got to where he is today, and working in design in Macau more generally.
Where are you originally from, and where and what did you study?
I am from Macau. I graduated from the Macao Polytechnic Institute’s Department of Integrated Design. This study changed me somewhat – made me calmer, not so hot-tempered, as I used to be.
Tell us about your most recent projects.
We recently designed a promotional image for a new local troupe in Macau [Macau Experimental Theatre], which was a fun and rewarding project. The work begins with the facial expressions of the company’s actors, emphasising their superb performance capabilities. Their expressions reflect the emotions of their roles, leaving an unforgettable impression on the viewer.
Why did you decide to take part in the Golden Pin Design Award 2015?
There are two reasons. Firstly, you must be able to evaluate your own work [and a design award is one way of doing this]. After graduation, for instance, there will be no more teachers to tell you which aspect of your work is good and which is not. Second, I hope more people will learn about and understand the work of people in Macau.
What are you most proud of to date?
What makes me most proud about my work is that we have a really lovely team, and we can learn from each other and grow together. I’m also proud that design is an inextricable part of my life.
What has been one of the more challenging aspects of working in design in Macau?
The biggest challenge is to make the public aware of the importance of design, to make them understand the value and purpose behind design, and to try to educate everyone about design. Macau is like a sparrow: it may be small, but all its organs are in good working order, and it has the potential to grow very big as it learns and improves.
Where do you hope to be in three to five years?
I still want to be a designer – just like when I started out, I hope to be always learning.
The call for entries for Golden Pin Design Award 2016 is now open until 30 June 2016. Find out how to enter here.
