While researching a story for Cool Hunting about the best spots to scope out in Jing’An District (coming soon!), I revisited Kin – the menswear boutique within the complex containing The Grumpy Pig, Trotter Bar and a DJ lab. Kin is just cool. The store is currently hosting the pop-up shop of Whillas & Gunn, an online multi-brand retailer that specializes in travel goods to the meet the demands of the modern man.

WG Trunk Co is their in-house line that features bags fit for the rugged urban gentleman who needs durable carryalls for his adventures – from trekking the grasslands of Mongolia to tackling the urban jungle of Manhattan. From what I gather, the WG man looks adventure right square in the eyes, lives on the edge of his comfort zone and looks damn good while doing it.

Launched in 2009, the brand is run in Shanghai by a very dashing dude named Richie (he’s also the model). He has taken his family’s heritage business into the 21st century, modernizing the designs to fit the needs of well-traveled chaps who want no-fuss, high quality style.

The canvas bags with leather straps remind me of the ruggedly handsome heritage brand Filson, but more affordable. Guys can beat the shit out of these bags and feel good knowing they will only look better for it. The leather will develop a nice patina and the canvas will soften into a certain texture that only time – not machines – can create.

If you’re not in the market for a new bag, KIN also carries a nice of edit of sneakers, shades and even fixie-friendly clothing – like tailored trousers with extra loops for holding your bike lock and discrete reflector strips that ensure safe night rides.

So yeah, go check it out. And stick around for a drink or meal at Grumpy Pig or Trotter Bar.
