“Art, craft and creativity are deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. The nation’s ancient inventiveness and elegant aesthetic have never come under question, but the issue here and now is how does China make – and make sense of – its own design culture for the modern world? Does it build according to Western models, and slavishly follow the path that design in Europe and the Americas has been following for several generations?
Of course not. China is unique, with its own set of unique challenges and its own particular problem-solving mindset. There is no doubt that it is in immediate need of a homegrown, native design philosophy; and this is where the Design Shanghai conference and seminar programme comes in.
