Design China is excited to announce our official media partnership with Beijing Design Week (BJDW) 2015. Entering its 5th edition, this year’s event will explore the idea of “Design for China” via a series of Design HOP areas, or city-wide programmes comprising of exhibitions, installations, pop-ups, workshops, seminars and lectures, each intended to activate “a contextualised dialogue between iconic areas of the Chinese capital and creative initiatives, envisioning new meanings for the public role of design in generating a contemporary urbanity”.
As an open and inclusive platform, Design HOP has grown over the years into a living ecosystem of productive relations among various stakeholders, from government planners, to public and private organisations, as well as individual entrepreneurs. To this day, BJDW has engaged the city “as a test-site, both questioning and empowering the dynamism between formal and informal forces that shape its survival”.
Design HOP 2015 will, thus, feature thematically-driven projects — from the future of housing and digital ecosystems, urban acupuncture and ‘craft architecture’, to the impact of emerging tech on fast changing urban demographics and lifestyles. In the words of BJDW Creative Director Bea Leanza, it is “an incubator that explores the widening economic and cultural implications of what ‘designing for China’ means today and tomorrow, and how local creative entrepreneurship is radically changing the significance of design for the 21st century city”.
