Of today’s increasingly high profile generation of Chinese fashion designers, Uma Wang is certainly one of the most accomplished, and one of the most assured in her aesthetic.
Showing once again on the schedule at Milan Fashion Week, Wang took her inspiration from the world of ballet for her latest spring-summer effort.
The ballet/fashion mash-up is a well-worn trope, and one often taken too literally, resulting in reams of ribbons and tulle. In Wang’s hands, however, the ultra-femininity of the quintessential ballerina was brought out through soft draping, fluid slip dresses, and sheer chiffon skirts over leotards.
As usual for Wang, there were signatures, such as frayed hems and simple, body-cocooning silhouettes. Her clothing symbolizes an appealing effortlessness, which of course takes quite an accomplished hand to execute with this level of sophistication.
It was ballet for grown ups, from a woman who continues to prove a worthy beacon for the future of Chinese design.
