It’s not hard to see that I ❤️ NYC. Prior to this trip, I’d never spent over 24 hours in New York (I kid you not), despite having lived on the East Coast for four years during college. Sadly, I spent the majority of my time in Boston, MA which, let’s be honest, doesn’t speak to my interests quite like NYC does.
In many ways, NYC reminds me of Beijing: dirty and grungy, with rough weather and hardened people … and yet it’s also crackling with energy and endless possibility. Most NYC residents I talked to seem to have a love-hate relationship with the city (doesn’t that sound familiar), noting how it’s enabling of hedonistic behavior (check again), how oftentimes they want to leave but can’t ever bring themselves to do it (yup).
In any case, I’d be happy to spend a couple years in NYC. I’m probably beginning to sound like a broken record but I love having occasions to dress up, to be amongst people who take care in their appearance – which in turn inspires me to be more creative, sartorially speaking of course. Not to say that you can’t find stylish people in San Francisco — they are just fewer and farther between.
Some venues featured here:
1) Happy Bones = Most photogenic café ever, with gorgeous granite table tops, chalky-white brick walls and fantastic lighting. The flat whites are damn good, too.
2) Papaya Dog = Apparently hot dogs are taken very seriously in NYC. I’m not much of a hot dog person but clearly it’s a no-brainer when it comes to late-night eats.
3) Opening Ceremony = Such a creative and fun space. Really felt like a fashion playground, with a beautiful selection of clothes, accessories and homewares to boot.
4) Milk Bar = If you spend any time on Instagram, you’ll know their cereal milk soft serves are popular. But I was surprised by how perfectly balanced the flavors were. Ordinarily I find soft serve far too sweet – this wasn’t at all and well-complemented by the salty cornflake rim.
5) E Taverna = You gotta go to Astoria for good Greek food, obvi.
6) Pepe Rosso = Best damn pasta I’ve ever had in my life. I could definitely eat here everyday which is dangerous… it’s a good thing they’re not in San Francisco.
